Even though it feels like we skipped fall this year, the leaves are still beautiful in many areas of our city. One of the places that I have spotted some gorgeous colors is Oaklawn Gardens in Germantown, TN. Located at 7831 Old Poplar Pike, the gardens are 20 acres of every kind of tree you can imagine. While it is known as a favorite for spring picture locations, the foliage here is worth the stop in the fall as well. The home located on the gardens was built in 1854 and since 1987 has served as the indoor part of the museum. The outdoor part consists of a firetruck, the first Germantown jail, a Southern Railway boxcar, a 1944 Norfolk and Western caboose, historic traffic lights and street signs, vintage farm equipment and so much more. There are brochures available for self-guided tours of the outdoor exhibits. And did I mention the trees? Many of them are labeled with signs indicating the name of the tree. The park has been granted Level 1 arboretum status because of the wide variety of trees found there.
The park was added to The National Register of Historic Places this year. Oaklawn Garden is a beautiful and peaceful place that is free and open to the public year around. Take a little stroll through history and enjoy some beautiful nature in the process.
