Giving Tuesday was started in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y in New York City. It always follows Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday as is a way for people to donate to non-profits and charities. But have you ever considered giving your time and talents to these worthwhile organizations? After all, according to this article, Memphis was ranked as the most giving city in America, giving an average of 5.6% of their income to philanthropy. Givingtuesday.org is a wonderful website that is dedicated to helping you find the perfect place to plug into your community. And if you don't believe there are that many opportunities in our area this site list 174 places that could use your time and talents this holiday season, and all the seasons in-between too! One of my favorite resources in the area is VolunteerOdyssey . Here is a very small sampling of the opportunities going on in our area today:
- Constance Abbey numerous opportunities including counseling and clothes closet volunteer
- Operation Warm Hearts the Shelby County School system's new coats, winter clothing, and toys drive
- Catholic Charities Food Pantry and clothing closet volunteer
- Blanket Drive for Room at the Inn
- Carpenter's Art Garden I can not say enough about this jewel tucked into the Binghampton area. Read all about this fantastic place here.
- And if none of the opportunities above are a good fit, there is a Pop-Up volunteer event in Germantown tonight to give you information on even more worthwhile opportunities in the area.
Happy Giving!!!
